The Transformation of the Urban Center in Buffalo
Like many American cities, Buffalo is undergoing a rapid urban renewal. Emerging Buffalo architecture trends are making way for new hotels, condominiums and residential apartments to accommodate the influx workers downtown. According to the 2016 Downtown Buffalo Development Guide, commercial and government investments in the city currently total over $5.5 billion. Below are a few of the exciting trends and projects that are helping to transform Buffalo into an economic hot spot:
High Rises on the Rise: 500 Pearl Street
Ellicott Development is constructing this 12-story structure, which will host a hotel and high-end apartments alongside thousands of square feet of office, retail and restaurant space. Six floors for above-ground parking will be covered by a concrete facade while the commercial and residential floors will feature open terraces. Next door is the newly renovated Buffalo Christian Center, which contains a pool, a fitness center and space for banquets.
Re-purposing: 192 Senca Street
What used to be Seneca Plumbing Supply will soon become a mixed-use commercial and residential facility. The structure connects to an additional 4,000 square feet of available commercial space. Ellicott Development has taken efforts to preserve and restore the building’s original architecture so that it qualifies for recognition from the National Register of Historic Places.
Sports Entertainment Hotels: HarborCenter
Pegula Sports and Entertainment’s $200 million facility on Washington St. is an all-in-one vacation spot for people who love live performances and athletic competitions. Boasting two professional-sized hockey rinks, the building is home to a Marriott Hotel, a restaurant and numerous retail stores. Best of all, it connects to the First Niagara Center, an arena that attracts high profile performers from around the globe.
