Originally, the building that houses The Giacomo was the United Office Building, built in 1929. During its construction, it was erected as a towering achievement of art deco architecture uniquely blended with a Mayan revival motif. At 20 stories in height this building stands as one of the tallest structures in Niagara Falls and is a landmark for the city.
Before Ellicott Development purchased and remodeled The Giacomo, it was home to a plethora of tenants. The lobby held a drug store, office supply company, stock brokerage office, and a restaurant. Higher up floors contained medical and dental offices, some of which stayed tenants until the late 1970s. Other tenants included secretarial services, insurance brokerages, Western Union, and several law offices.
In 2010, it was remodeled into what is now a breathtakingly gorgeous boutique hotel with 41 guest rooms, 2 luxurious lounges, and fantastic service. The Giacomo is so outstanding that it was recently named part of the Choice Hotels International, Inc. Ascend Hotel Collection. The Giacomo joins several other upscale and one-of-a-kind hotels that work to embody the Ascend Hotel Collection tagline “Let the destination reach you.” It truly is a sight to see and surely has been repurposed and redesigned in ways unimaginable to the people of 1929. You (and your pet) can even live at our Residences at The Giacomo.
