Kaleida is presently on track to select a plan for the redevelopment of Women & Children’s Hospital. On January 28, 2016, four development companies from the Buffalo area gathered at Kleinhans Music Hall to present plans and ideas for the reuse of Women & Children’s Hospital. While we are all eagerly awaiting to find out which plan will be chosen, it looks as if we won’t have to wait any longer than anticipated!
There are still multiple steps to be completed before a final decision is made by Kaleida Health. Meetings with the community advisory committee and input from the Elmwood Village Association are important to the decision making process. Feedback from the local community is also important.
Ellicott Development has submitted their proposal for The Elmwood Center. The Elmwood Center has been planned to be developed over a period of 5 years and includes a minimal amount of disruption of the present state of the campus. The majority of plans call for reuse of the 7 existing buildings, all of which are interconnected. These plans allow for the development period to be quicker and less troublemaking for the Elmwood community.
If selected, production of the Elmwood Center could begin as early as spring 2018 with phase 1 of development. Currently, phase 1 includes plans for 64 market rate apartments, 89 independent senior living apartments, a 152 room hotel, commercial office space, a daycare facility, grammar charter school including a regulation gymnasium, a grocery store with surface lot parking, and a Performing Arts Center to set between 1,200 – 1,500 people. Phase 2 in summer 2019 would then include a new build with mixed use purposes of retail, office, 24 apartments, and surface lot parking.
Ellicott Development is no stranger to projects in The Elmwood Village area and is sure of the complementary effect the Elmwood Center will have to the existing Village establishments. The uses designated to The Elmwood Center will provide the community with assets through the addition of the new amenities as well as the programs and services provided once the project is completed.
A decision will hopefully be made sometime during Summer 2016.
